A good place to find out is to look at what Jesus stated in Matthew 24:36 which says, “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” In other words, no person alive—and not even God’s own Son—knows the exact moment or day when the second coming of Christ will take place. This is a very simple and concise scripture that needs to be taken for just what it says. Note that the scripture only mentions that the day and the hour will not be known; however there is still a week, month, season, and year that remain in the equation.
Acts 1:1-11 refers to the second coming of Christ and his restoration of the kingdom to Israel. Verse 7 says it is not given to anyone to know the times or seasons, which the Father has put in his own power, but in verse 8, Jesus tells his followers that they would receive power when they received the help of the Holy Spirit after he returned to his Father in heaven. If Christ’s followers today receive the Holy Spirit as they did back then, they have been granted the power to know the times and seasons even if the exact day or hour are not known, just as stated in Matthew 24:36.
Another scriptural passage that gives the same indication is 1 Thessalonians 5:1-9. Here Paul writes, “But of the times and seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.” Verses 4-5 say that day should not overtake you as a thief because you are the children of light. This shows that a true Christian should be able to discern the times (years) and seasons. Why else would Christ emphasize to his followers the importance of watching for his second coming? Read Mark 13:32-37.
Those who strongly believe that the world will end before the beginning of 2013—and others who might harbor some doubts about this date, yet wonder if it might be true—would be wise to research the Bible scriptures: The word of the Almighty Father makes it clear that the world cannot end on that day. Although determination of the exact day and hour of Christ’s second coming is not possible for us, the end of the world is another matter altogether and actually happens years later than the event that marks the beginning of Jesus’ coming. The Bible books of Revelation and Daniel, along with many other references in both the New and Old Testament, provide proof on that subject.
In Matthew 24:3, Jesus’ disciples asked him several questions: When would these things occur, and what would be the sign of his second coming, and of the end of the world. Christ went on to explain throughout that chapter, providing both the disciples at that time, and those of us alive today, with many clues to help answer those questions.
There is also much information in the Bible book of Daniel about the events that will lead up to the second coming of Christ, the changes that will take place in the governments of this world, and the time period that will bring this wicked setup to a final end. A true Bible scholar shows diligence by rightly diving the word of truth to understand what Jehovah’s ministers were inspired to write, and the clues they provided to help people determine what will happen and the order in which it will unfold. (Read 2 Timothy 2:15 and 2 Peter 1:20-21.) A Christian will do their research and thus know the times and seasons when Jesus Christ will come again, even though they will not be able to pinpoint the exact day or hour.
To address 21 December, 2012 as being the end of the world: Don’t let it worry you. It is a lie. The end of the world will not happen until 3 ½ years after the second coming of Christ, which will be a visual event witnessed by all. Read Daniel 12:6-7 and Revelation 1:7. A true student of God’s word will use these teachings to prove why a date set by man’s doctrine to determine the end of the world is impossible.
