Society's Theme

Written by

When I was little, my dad taught me to pat my head and rub my tummy at the same time. I could do it and he was so proud of me.

I remember it clearly. It was easy. But seeing how pleased he was delighted me even further. So, of course I grew up wanting to please him.

That is a memory I carried with me all my life. Doing two things concurrently. Perceived success!

As I placed my glass to get running water from the refrigerator recently, I wondered why the stream was so low. Two other sources of water were already being used, so I considered that it might be more efficient to fill my glass later when the pressure flow returned to its normal state.

After all, my internal stopwatch was running. And although I wanted clean water, I also needed to get other things done.

So, I put myself on hold.

Overflow of Water

And there it was.

Society’s theme.

In American culture, activities seem endless. From sun up to bedtime, work, worry, stress, routines, the need to care for ourselves and others, and more, can overwhelm us. We can become exhausted and uninspired, and even worse – inattentive to what’s important.

Endless Activities

Some of us run businesses, work full time, care for sick family members, raise and help children and grandchildren, take care of others, recover from hurricanes, and so on.

We barely have time to catch our breath.

No Time To Catch Breath

But it’s not really about the activities and things we do.

It’s about ourselves, and becoming mindful to what matters. That includes ourselves.

When we overdo things, over think things, and take on too much, it can divert us from where we’re headed.

And what about Martha? She was distracted by all the arrangements that had to be made. And what did Jesus say to her? That she was worried and bothered about things that were less important. Luke 10:38-42

Mind Full or Mindfull

To be virtuous servants we must be in tune with the One and His Son whom we serve.

We must slow down and pause from society’s theme.

How can we get control - or in harmony with - the involvedness and complexity we find ourselves in?

Our Creators Word Provides Solutions

Our Creator’s words provide some solutions.

The apostles gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught. And He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while.” For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. They went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves. Mark 6:30-32

A Secluded Place with Activities

A secluded place with rest is great advice!

A Secluded Place

Activities are always there.

What matters is that we manage ourselves. Learn to watch ourselves, manage our thoughts and reactions, and stay mindful of our Creator and His Son.

We read their Word.

But reading is not enough.

We must practice. Frequently, incessantly, ceaselessly.

Practice to promote inner peace.

Promote Inner Peace

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Transform to become Christlike. Romans 8:29.

And walk in the manner worthy of him. Colossians 1:10.

1 Peter 5:6-7 says, Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Fountain of Life

Just as the overtaxed water sources could not adequately produce, you also can lose strength if you attempt to multi-task nonstop without caring for yourself.

Remember, it takes mindfulness AND practice. Note to self.

What are other ways you can think of to cope with society's theme?
